Getting Started on ICQ

To Play another player at WordZap several things have to be set up correctly at both ends:
  1. Both players must have ICQ installed. If you do not have version 2001b you may want to upgrade. You can download ICQ at icq.com
  2. Both players need to have WordZap Deluxe Installed.  Classic WordZap does not work online -- for online play you must have the Deluxe version. If you have not yet installed this go to http://wordzap.com/downloadnow.asp.

  3. ICQ must be set up to find and launch WordZap. Start ICQ, click the MAIN button and select Preferences. Your screen should look like this:
Select Launch Voice/Video/Games and then scroll down and hilite WordZap as shown above.

  4. If WordZap is there, click on Edit -- otherwise click on New External. You need to have your settings as shown below:

If it shows "WORDZAPPATH\WORDZAPFILE", change this to C:\\WordZap\wordzap.exe as shown above in both places. If you didn't install WordZap Deluxe into C:\Wordzap (the default) then Browse to the correct directory. Otherwise, all the fields should be exactly as shown. When it is correct, click OK and OK again.

  5. Linking up to another WordZap player: select the person you want to play from the Online ICQ Contact List and look down the menu until you see Launch Games. If WordZap is correctly installed, you should see:

  6. Click WordZap, add a message to the other player and then Send. WordZap should launch as soon as your opponent OK's the linkup.

  7. Linking up via ICQ can be tricky. If WordZap starts but does not complete the link, you may have firewall problems. ICQ 2001b has new features to help you play thru firewalls but the details depend on exactly whose firewall you have installed. At this point you just have to try and figure it out since we only have experience with our firewall. ICQ 2001b managed to figure out our firewall all by itself so maybe it will do it for you too.

Finding new Opponents: Most of the very active players play on the ladder so a good first place to look is the WordZap Ladder Page. If you want someone in a particular time zone or language, check these lists:
